BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO ORIENTEERING.

ORIENTEERING SPORT.

The OBJECTIVE is to follow a route through the country side in less time than other competitors. You must go through certain control points during the route. In order to accomplish that objective you can use a map, a compass and a description sheet.
​

MAP: is a graphic representation of the land. The most important indicator is the Scale which tells you the actual size of the land. It will be given in figures like 1:20.000. That means that 1 cm in the map represents 20.000 cm (200 m) in the real country side.

Contour lines link all the points at the same height and show the profile. Lines very close together mean that there is a very steep slope. If they are far to each other will represent a flat terrain.

COMPASS: magnetized needle that turns freely and points to magnetic north.

CONTROL DESCRIPTION SHEET: gives you the exact location of the control point using descriptions or clear images.

MARKER, BEACON: colored flags (usually orange and white) which mark the control point where you must punch your control sheet.

SPECIFIC VOCABULARY:

- Contour: curva de nivel.
- Steep: escarpado.
- Upland: zona más elevada del terreno.
- Pit: hoyo.
- Gullies: zanja, hondonada, barranco pequeño.




- Knoll: loma.
- Crag: risco.
- Boulder: peña.
- Marsh: pantano 
- Ditch: acequia.
- Moorland: páramo.
